Description
Discovered by C. Hatchett in 1801 in London, England. Niobium is a silver-colored metal usually found with tantalum, and the two elements are separated by fractional crystallization from their respective fluorine complexes. Niobium is found in the earth's crust in parts per million (ppm). as a pure metal, niobium is highly reactive and forms extremely stable oxides when exposed to air, which enhances its resistance to corrosion. Niobium reacts with a wide range of non-metals at high temperatures.
Products Description
Niobium and its alloys have a very high melting point and are therefore used in high temperature engineered products (temperatures in excess of 1200 degrees Celsius). Niobium is also used as an alloying agent for certain steels, greatly increasing the strength of the material. Niobium is also used in atomic reactors because of its corrosion resistance and, when combined with tin (Nb₃Sn) or zirconium, it is highly superconductive.
