Zirconium dioxide ( ZrO2), sometimes called zirconium oxide (not to be confused with zircon), is a white crystalline zirconium oxide. Its most naturally occurring form is plagioclase zircon with a monoclinic crystal structure. Dopant-stabilized cubic-structured zirconia, cubic zirconia, in a variety of colors are synthesized for use as gemstones and diamond imitations.

Zirconium dioxide is one of the most studied ceramic materials.ZrO 2 has a monoclinic crystal structure at room temperature, which transforms to tetragonal and cubic crystal structures at higher temperatures. The volume change caused by the transformation of the structure from tetragonal to monoclinic to cubic produces high stresses that lead to its rupture on cooling at high temperatures. The tetragonal and/or cubic phases are stabilized when zirconia is mixed with some other oxides. Effective dopants include magnesium oxide (MgO), yttrium oxide ( Y 2 O 3 , yttrium oxide), calcium oxide ( CaO ) and cerium(III) oxide ( Ce 2 O 3 ). Zirconium oxide is generally more useful in its phase "stable" state.
